Clubs and Activities
Club Chartering begins at September’s Club Fair. Clubs set up booths promoting and explaining their club’s mission. Clubs are widely diverse and represent cultural, political, educational, and recreational interests. Clubs with active membership include the Urban Explorers' Club, the Jewish Affairs Club, SJKLit (a student book club), the Chocolate Lovers Club, the Black Affairs Club, the Food Critic's Club, Booster Squad, the Student Diversity Leadership Council, and the Jazz Club, to name a few. Students with interests not represented at the Club Fair may propose a new club by submitting a proposal and petition. Each club is guided by a faculty advisor. Most clubs meet in the course of the school day with occasional activities planned after school or on weekends.

SJK's mission statement calls us to "challenge the minds, fire the imaginations and train the bodies of the young people who have been entrusted to us; to enlarge their spiritual lives; and to increase their capacity for mutual and self-respect."
Through our offerings in ceramics, photography, woodworking, drawing, painting, printmaking and art history, the Visual Arts Department hopes to achieve these goals for all our students. Assignments that invite individual responses inspire students' imaginations. Immersing students in a creative process develops their confidence in taking risks and challenges their problem-solving skills. Discussions and journal writing nurture critical thinking and meta-cognitive skills as students reflect on their work.
